Dense forest canopy at JW Wells State Park with morning light filtering through the trees

Stephenson, Michigan · Upper Peninsula

The woods
remember what
the city forgets

At the northern threshold of Michigan's wild heart, where ancient hemlock and pine stand sentinel over a landscape that asks for nothing but your presence.

About the Park

A gateway to
untouched wilderness

JW Wells State Park lies along M-35 in the quiet community of Stephenson, Michigan — a place where the Upper Peninsula reveals itself slowly, one winding road and hidden clearing at a time.

The North Entrance serves as a threshold between the familiar and the wild. Beyond it, the Porcupine Mountain Wilderness State Park unfolds — over 60,000 acres of old-growth forest, cascading waterways, and ridgelines that disappear into lake Michigan fog.

This is not a park designed for spectacle. It is a park designed for attention — for the hiker who notices the difference between hemlock bark and pine bark, for the camper who listens to the silence between owl calls, for the traveler who understands that some of the best journeys begin at a simple wooden signpost.

The Experience

What awaits
beyond the entrance

Trails & Hiking

Miles of trail network wind through old-growth hardwood and conifer stands. From easy riverside strolls to challenging ridge climbs, the park rewards every pace with quiet beauty and the occasional glimpse of a moose in the distance.

Camping

Settle into a site where the canopy closes overhead and the only light after dark is the Milky Way. Campgrounds near the North Entrance offer a peaceful basecamp for exploring the surrounding wilderness without the crowds.

Fishing & Water

Cold, clear streams feed into the Manistique River system — a destination for anglers seeking trout and salmon. The surrounding lakes offer kayaking and canoeing through glassy morning surfaces veiled in mist.

Wildlife Viewing

The Porcupine Mountains remain one of the few places in the Lower Peninsula's northern neighbor where moose, loons, and black bears still move through undisturbed habitat. Patience and quiet are the only requirements.

Four Seasons

Spring wildflowers, summer green canopies, autumn's copper and gold explosions, winter's crystalline silence — each season transforms the park into a different world. The North Entrance welcomes visitors year-round.

Stargazing

With minimal light pollution and high elevation nearby, the night sky here is extraordinary. The Porcupine Mountains are an International Dark Sky area — a rare and precious gift for anyone who has never seen the heavens unfiltered.

The Landscape

Michigan's
wild heart

Every trail reveals a new composition — light through hemlock, water over ancient rock, the slow architecture of trees that have stood for centuries.
